Director of Music

Part-time

Position Purpose:

The Director of Music supports and enlivens the worship of Napa Valley Lutheran Church by providing excellent musical leadership. Working with the Worship Ministry Team and pastors, the Director of Music helps to plan meaningful worship and bring people of many ages together in making music.

 

Supervision:

The Director of Music is supervised by the senior Pastor.

 

Terms of Employment:

This is an “at will” position: employment may be terminated at any time by either party for any reason.

 

Since this position totals about 8 hours per week, benefits are not provided. The Director of Music will inform supervising pastor of planned absences (up to four Sundays per year without loss of pay), with a minimum of two weeks’ advance notice. Some funding is available for continuing education.


As a condition of employment, the selected applicant must successfully pass a background check and basic abuse-prevention training.

There will be a probationary period of 6 weeks beginning at the time of employment to determine whether employment will be extended.

 

This position can be re-structured somewhat to fit the gifts and abilities of a desirable candidate. The following describes our ideal:

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and coordinate the entire music program, providing leadership and resource to other musicians.
  2. In cooperation with worship planners, select music for Sunday worship services, mid-week worship occasions, and all special celebrations of worship.
  3. Coordinate the scheduling of organists/pianists who may be enlisted to play for Sunday morning and other worship services.
  4. Serve as song leader and cantor for weekly worship services.
  5. Hold weekly adult band and choir rehearsals during the program year, and work with vocalists/instrumentalists as needed.
  6. Attend weekly staff meeting and monthly Worship Ministry Team meeting to participate in short- and long-term planning and evaluation of worship.
  7. Recruit and facilitate music ministry participation from all age groups within the congregation.
  8. Prepare and submit in a timely manner information for worship bulletins and church newsletters, as needed.
  9. Work with the Worship Ministry Team to develop an annual budget.
  10. Choose and purchase music within approved budgetary parameters.
  11. Maintain the music library.
  12. Inform the Worship Ministry Team of needed maintenance of all instruments.
  13. Participate with church leaders and staff in implementing congregational goals.
  14. Maintain professional competency by attending continuing education opportunities and reading professional publications.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in music, church music, or other related area.
  2. Demonstrated knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Lutheran theology, liturgical practice, and use of music in worship.
  3. Demonstrated competency in vocal performance and vocal instruction.
  4. Demonstrated skill and competency at the keyboard, particularly organ and piano, and a working knowledge of other instruments.
  5. Experience and competency directing, encouraging, and motivating volunteer choirs and bands of various age groups and abilities; willingness to educate, and to promote fun in a warm rehearsal environment.
  6. Ability to work well with people of all ages, and as a flexible team member with Pastors, staff, and congregational leaders.
  7. Openness to, enthusiasm for, and skill in a variety of styles of church music—old and new.

Estimated Hours for Director of Music Position (averaged):

Sunday morning duties (48 Sundays per year):         

            Arrive at church                                                         9:00 a.m.

            Warm up with musicians for 10 a.m. service            9:15 a.m.

            Warm up choir for 10 a.m. service                            9:30 a.m.

            Involvement with 10 a.m. service                            10:00 a.m.

            Service ends                                                             11:30 a.m.

 Total Sunday morning time = 2 ½ hours per week

 

Rehearsal duties (40 weeks per year):

            Choir practice – weeknight                                         1 ½ hours/week

            Band practice – weeknight                                         1 hour/week

            Choir administration – selecting, learning music      1 ½ hours/week

 Total rehearsal time = 4 hours per week

 

General planning and administration of program

            Worship Ministry Team meeting       (1/month)       2 hours/month

            Staff meetings (3-4 weeks per month)                     1 hour/week

            Other planning/organizing time                               2 hours/month

 Total planning/administration time = about 2 hours/week

 

Other worship involvement:

            Lent                                                                 Six Wednesday evenings

            Holy Week/Easter Sunday                               Three or four services

            Thanksgiving                                                   One service

            Christmas Eve                                                 Two services

 

            Possibility of other worship times exists.

 

Summary of hours per week (averaged):

Note: The Organist of Napa Valley Lutheran Church has the first right of refusal for providing music for all weddings and funerals held at the church when the organ/piano is the primary instrument used. Fees for these services are not provided by the church, but are honoraria from couples and families at an amount suggested by church policy. The use of the organ/piano by guest musicians is allowed with permission of the NVLC Director of Music.

 

Salary: $1,200 per month.

NURSERY ATTENDANT

REPORTS TO: Pastor Julie Webb

 

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS: Ability to relate to and care for infants and children in a group setting and effectively communicate with their parents and nursery volunteers to assure a safe, secure, healthy, and nurturing nursery environment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: At least 18 years old; training in child care basics and experience in caring for children; certification in Infant/Child First Aid and CPR preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.

 

BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS:

--Care for infants, toddlers, and children in comfortable, safe environment

--Adhere to high standards of conduct for ministry, including NVLC’s abuse- prevention policy and Guidelines for Appropriate Affection

--Maintain confidentiality

--Be able to lift 40 pounds unaided and move object 40 feet

--Pass background check and complete training module

--Arrive 30 minutes prior to worship service or event and stay 15 minutes  

   after the last child has been picked up

--Respectfully oversee nursery volunteers during church services and events

--Notify staff if unable to meet scheduled commitment, providing as much

   notice as possible

--Report to supervisor and in writing any incidents involving accident or injury

--Send for child’s caregiver in case of emergency, an inconsolable child,

   or other irresolvable issues

--Ensure children are safely returned to their adult caregivers

--Wipe toys, vacuum and tidy nursery after each shift; clean spills and crumbs from the nursery floor and play areas and dispose of trash

--Perform other duties as assigned

 

ATTRIBUTES:

Aptitudes: An understanding of and willingness to meet the emotional, mental, physical, and social needs of children. Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with staff, parents, and congregation members.

 

Temperament: Natural aptitude for working sensitively and empathetically with patience, flexibility, good judgment. High sense of responsibility for the safety and well-being of children.

 

CLASSIFICATION: Part-time, non-exempt supporting professional with no benefits.

 

HOURS: 9:30 AM to 12 Noon for Sunday worship; other events as scheduled

 

RATE OF PAY: $16.00 per hour

CHILDREN’S CHAPEL LEADER

REPORTS TO: Pastor Julie Webb

As part of a two-person team, the Children’s Chapel Leader will facilitate simple faith formation (Sunday School) sessions for young children during part of the Sunday morning worship service, using provided Children’s Chapel curriculum that is friendly to Lutheran theology and practice. When not providing faith formation leadership, the CCL will assist the Childcare Attendant.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS: Ability to engage young children in exploring the stories and symbols of Lutheran Christian faith. Ability to relate to and care for infants and children in a group setting and effectively communicate with their parents and nursery volunteers to assure a safe, secure, healthy, and nurturing nursery environment.

QUALIFICATIONS: At least 18 years old; training in Early Childhood Education; familiarity with mainline Protestant Christian faith and teachings; training in child care basics and experience in caring for children; certification in Infant/Child First Aid and CPR preferred. Training in work with children with special challenges/difficult backgrounds preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
